There's a particular kind of reading that only really begins once the evenings draw in. The light goes early, the kettle goes on, and suddenly a book isn't just something you're reading. It's somewhere you're staying.
The books on this shelf weren't chosen because they're set in October, though several are. They were chosen for their atmosphere. Old houses and older secrets. Weather that behaves like a character. A slight chill at the edge of the page, and something warm at the centre of it. If a book can make you want to close the curtains and read one more chapter, it earned its place here.
Take what appeals, ignore what doesn't, and if one of these becomes your book of the season, I'd love to hear about it.
Take a book from the shelf
Before you go
If you have a moment this evening, ask yourself which season your reading life is in right now. Not the calendar's season, yours. And then let that answer choose your next book, rather than the other way round.
